The Body Builders Series juxtaposes incongruent visual elements to explore assumptions about masculinity and aging. The iconographic elements featured in these collaged compositions are rooted in two repetitive, highly gendered processes: weightlifting and needlework. Images of weightlifting men from bodybuilding magazines appear on pastel gradient backgrounds, but the weights featured in the original photographs have been replaced by crocheted doilies. The delicate, intricate patterns of the latter serve as substitutes for the sense of power, masculinity and youth typically assigned to the former, emphasizing the absurdities of viewing these activities and the objects associated with them along strictly binary lines.
